2008 District Council elections - Lib Dems gain 5 seats from Tories.

Biggest swing of seats from Tories to Lib Dems in the Country...

Commenting on the Liberal Democrat gains on Stratford-On-Avon Council, Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg, said:

"This is an excellent result for Stratford-on-Avon Liberal Democrats. The Liberal Democrat group will now have a much stronger voice on the Council, pushing for policies to make Stratford-on-Avon safer and greener, while also seeking greater value for money.

"These gains reflect Liberal Democrat councillors in Stratford-on-Avon working hard for their constituents all year round."

The Conservative performance at the District Council elections on May 1st in Stratford upon Avon was amongst the worst in the country. Five Conservative seats fell to the Liberal Democrats.

Conservative Councillors losing their seats included the Deputy Conservative Leader and two Executive Portfolio Holders.

Cllr Hazel Wright, Leader of the Lib Dems on Stratford District Council, said, 'this was a terrible performance by the Conservatives in Stratford - there was nowhere worse for them in the whole country. The reasons are simple - an arrogant approach that rides roughshod over local people. Residents were angry at the lack of flexibility in their approach to collecting household waste and in their attitude to World Class Stratford.'

In Stratford Town the Lib Dems has a 'clean sweep', taking all four seats. Hazel added, 'many people were incensed at the way the Town they love is being gradually destroyed by the Tories - first with new housing developments and now the Bancroft Gardens and the proposed bridge.

I cannot believe that the Tories will just shrug this defeat off and continue to ignore residents' views'.

Household Waste Collection Survey

The District Council intends to make major changes to the household waste collection system, starting from August 2008. It will involve three wheelie bins for most homes:

 One bin for green waste and food waste

 One bin for dry re-cyclables

 One for non recyclables and food waste

The Council says that it does not think three bins will be a problem for most households, but is allowing for some 3,000 houses in the district to carry on using sacks. This will be mainly where rubbish has to be taken through the house and there is no front garden.

However, a number of residents have expressed some concerns over the new arrangements and we are writing now to ask your views. We can then make sure that the Council is aware of concerns when it comes to make the final collection arrangements.
